A BDR team swapped cold connects for engage-then-connect. Acceptance rose from 18% to 47%.

The question: does warming a prospect by engaging their content before connecting beat cold outreach?

The case: a B2B sales team split prospects into two arms for 6 weeks. Arm A: cold connection request with a note. Arm B: comment meaningfully on 1–2 of the prospect's posts over a week, then send the same note. Sample: ~220 prospects, roughly split.

Three findings:
— Acceptance rate: 18% cold vs 47% warmed — a 2.6x lift.
— Reply-to-first-message rate roughly doubled in the warmed arm — recognition lowered the response barrier.
— The warming cost ~3–4 minutes per prospect, capping how many a rep could run weekly.

Limitations: reps weren't blinded and may have unconsciously favored the warmed arm; prospects weren't randomized by seniority. Treat as directional.

What it means for B2B: pre-engagement converts a stranger into a familiar name, and familiarity is the cheapest persuasion variable on the platform — but it doesn't scale infinitely.

Bottom line: warming roughly tripled acceptance at a real time cost — a quality-over-volume trade, not a free lunch.
