A creator narrowed from 'marketing' to one sub-niche. Followers slowed, but reply quality jumped.

The question: does narrowing your topic cost reach, and is the trade worth it for B2B pipeline?

The case: a B2B consultant deliberately narrowed from broad 'marketing' content to 'pricing strategy for SaaS' for two quarters. They tracked follower growth, reach, and a hand-coded 'reply quality' score (does the commenter match the ideal buyer?). Sample: ~80 posts pre/post.

Three findings:
— Follower growth slowed ~30% — narrower topics attract fewer casual followers.
— Median reach per post dipped ~15%, but reach among the target title (SaaS founders/CFOs) rose.
— Inbound consulting inquiries doubled, despite the smaller audience — relevance beat volume for conversion.

Limitations: 'reply quality' was coded by the consultant (the interested party), inviting bias. Single creator, no control.

What it means for B2B: vanity reach and qualified reach can move in opposite directions — narrowing trades the first for the second.

Bottom line: narrowing cost audience size but plausibly bought audience fit — measure who engages, not how many.
