A founder tested 'personal story' vs 'pure data' posts. Stories won reach; data won DMs.
The question: do narrative posts or data-driven posts drive more business outcomes, not just engagement?
The case: a B2B founder alternated two post archetypes for a quarter — first-person narrative posts and dry data/insight posts — on matched topics. They tracked reach, comments, and inbound DMs that mentioned the post. Sample: ~36 posts, 18 per type.
Three findings:
— Story posts averaged ~1.6x the reach and far more comments.
— Data posts produced ~2x the qualified inbound DMs per post, despite lower reach.
— The DMs from data posts skipped small talk — they referenced the specific number and asked a buying-stage question.
Limitations: 'qualified' was the founder's judgment call; small sample; the two types may differ in ways beyond format.
What it means for B2B: reach and intent are different currencies — stories buy the first, specificity buys the second. Optimizing for engagement can quietly suppress pipeline.
Bottom line: stories went wide, data went deep — the right mix depends on whether you need awareness or DMs.
