'Q: I use the manufacturer's product descriptions like every other retailer. Will I get a duplicate content penalty?'
Short answer: No penalty — but you face a filtering problem, which is a different and very real issue.
The longer version: there's no penalty for using the same manufacturer copy as 50 other shops. What happens instead is filtering: when many retailers carry identical descriptions, Google picks a few to show and filters the rest out of results for that query. If your page is otherwise weak (few links, slow, no reviews), you're the one filtered. So the copy isn't punished — it just fails to differentiate you.
The winners add what the manufacturer copy lacks: genuine user reviews, your own photos, sizing notes, comparison tables, real Q&A. That unique layer is what gets your version chosen over identical competitors.
Rule of thumb: shared descriptions aren't penalized, they're filtered. Win by adding what others don't have.
