The question: does newsjacking trending topics reliably borrow their reach, or is that a misunderstanding of how LinkedIn's feed actually selects content?
The advice imports a Twitter/X mental model — trending = discoverable. But LinkedIn's feed is interest-graph and connection driven, with weak real-time trend surfacing. There's no strong trending tab funneling strangers to your hot take.
Three findings:
— Trend posts mostly reach your existing network, same as any post; the 'trend' rarely adds new-audience distribution.
— Crowding is the cost: when everyone covers the same news, your take competes in a saturated moment and gets buried.
— Evergreen, specific posts often out-earn trend-chasing over a 30-day window because they keep surfacing and accruing saves.
Caveats: occasional platform-level trend features come and go; some niches do cluster around events. Directional, sample-dependent.
Bottom line: trends don't hand you reach on LinkedIn the way they do elsewhere. Use a trend only when you have a genuinely differentiated angle — otherwise the evergreen post you skipped would have outperformed it.
