Myth: a narrow niche limits how big the community can get
Founders broaden the topic to grow, and broadening kills the thing that made people belong. A wide community has no shared language, no inside references, no reason to defend it. 'For everyone' means 'for no one in particular' — and nobody feels at home there.
The correction — Narrow-and-Deepen, not broaden:
☐ Keep the topic narrow enough that members recognize each other instantly
☐ Grow by going deeper: sub-rituals, jargon, a shared canon of references
☐ Add adjacent depth (advanced/beginner tracks) before adjacent topics
☐ Test any expansion in a sub-channel before reshaping the whole community
☐ Protect the in-group language — it's the moat
Belonging comes from specificity. Narrow communities retain harder and refer faster than broad ones.
Save this for your next launch.
