Myth: onboarding is the first day
Treating onboarding as day one ignores where people actually churn: the gap between joining and their first real win. Most members quit in week 2-3, fully 'onboarded' on paper but never activated. The first day is the cheapest moment to lose nobody.
The correction — Activation Milestones, not a welcome flow:
☐ Define the single 'aha' action (first reply received, first deal posted)
☐ Map the median days-to-aha — that's your real onboarding length
☐ Place a triggered nudge at each step where people stall
☐ Onboarding 'ends' only when the member hits the aha, not at day 1
☐ Track activation rate (% reaching aha), not signup count
Onboarding is the path to first value. It lasts as long as that path does.
Save this for your next launch.
