Will a duplicate content penalty hit me if two pages overlap?
Q: Two of my posts cover similar ground. Am I about to get a duplicate content penalty?
A: Short answer: no — there's no "duplicate content penalty" in the way people fear. Longer answer: this is one of the stickiest myths around. Google doesn't penalize you for similar pages; it just picks one to show and filters the rest, or splits signals between them. That's a relevance and cannibalization problem, not a punishment. The real cost is two weak pages competing instead of one strong page winning. The fix isn't panic — it's consolidation: merge the overlapping posts into one definitive piece and redirect the loser. Scraped, site-wide copied content is a different (manipulative) story. But two of your own overlapping posts? Just tidy them up.
Anyone want me to go deeper on this? React 👍
