Are long-tail keywords always the easy way in for a new site?
Q: New site here. Everyone says go for long-tail keywords because they're easy. Right?
A: Short answer: not automatically — "long-tail" doesn't mean "low competition." Longer answer: people conflate the two, but a long, specific phrase can still be brutally contested if it's commercial, and a shorter phrase in a sleepy niche can be wide open. What you actually want isn't length — it's low difficulty plus genuine searcher intent you can satisfy better than what's ranking. Some long-tails also have basically zero demand, so you'll rank #1 for nobody. Check that real people search it, that the current results are beatable, and that you can answer it well. Target weak competition with real demand, whether the phrase is long or short.
