Myth: high engagement rate means a healthy community
Engagement rate hides who is engaging. A 'healthy' 40% can be the same 12 superfans posting all day while 88% silently churn. The metric flatters you right up until the core burns out and the whole thing collapses at once.
The correction — measure breadth, not just depth:
☐ Track Active Member Ratio: unique posters / total members per week
☐ Track 'first-time poster %' each week (new blood activating)
☐ Track 'silent-to-active conversion' over 30 days
☐ Watch the top-10 contributors' share — if they're over 60% of posts, you're fragile
☐ Set an alert when first-time posters drop two weeks running
A community is healthy when the number of people participating grows, not when the same few post more.
Save this for your next launch.
