Editing live vs using a staging site

A staging site is a private copy of your site where you can test changes without visitors ever seeing them.

When editing the live site is fine:
— Writing a post, swapping an image, changing a color. Low risk, easy to undo.

When to use staging instead:
— Updating a major plugin, changing themes, or editing code. These can break the whole site, and breaking it in front of customers is the nightmare you want to avoid.

Many good hosts offer a one-click staging copy. If yours doesn't, at least take a full backup before risky changes so you can restore.

In plain words: tiny edits go live, scary changes go to a staging copy first, and always back up before the scary ones.
