Myth: "Always update everything the second a new version appears"

Myth: "Always update everything the second a new version appears"

You've probably been told to click "update" the instant the little red dot shows up. The correction: wait 3 to 7 days on big version jumps.

Here's why. A plugin is just an add-on that gives WordPress new abilities. When its author ships an update, the very first version sometimes has a bug they didn't catch. The people who update on day one are the ones who find it the hard way.

What to do instead:
— Update right away only for anything labeled "security"
— For normal updates, wait a few days and skim the reviews tab
— Always back up first (a backup is a saved copy you can restore)

In plain words: security fixes go in now, everything else can wait a week.
