Myth: points and badges drive long-term engagement
Points reward volume, so they manufacture noise — low-effort posts farmed for the leaderboard. Extrinsic rewards also crowd out the intrinsic reason people showed up. The leaderboard spikes for two weeks, then the top 5 lock it and everyone else quits.
The correction — reward outcomes, not actions:
☐ Tie recognition to results members care about (a deal closed, a question answered, a tool shipped)
☐ Make recognition human and specific, not automated points
☐ Reset any ranking on a cadence (monthly) so newcomers can win
☐ Cap visible leaderboards to top 3 to avoid a permanent hierarchy
☐ Track 'helpful replies', not 'message count'
If you must gamify, gamify the behavior that survives the badge being removed.
Save this for your next launch.
