Lead with your credentials, or lead with the answer?

Lead with your credentials, or lead with the answer?

Every pitch has two ingredients: who you are, and what you say. Beginners agonize over the order. Here is the honest tradeoff.

1. Answer first — open with the useful quote, then your title. Best when the reporter clearly just wants a good line and is short on time.
2. Credentials first — open with why you're qualified, then the answer. Best when the topic is sensitive (health, money, law) and the reporter must trust the source before the words.

Think of it like meeting a doctor. For a sore throat, you want the advice fast. For surgery, you want to know their training first.

My beginner default: one short credential line, then the answer. Something like "I've managed $2M in ad spend — here's what I'd say:" That earns trust without burying your point.

Try this today: rewrite one pitch so your job title and your best line both appear in the first two sentences.
