Answering first vs. answering best
New sources worry about a tradeoff: should I fire off a quick reply to be early, or take an hour to polish it? Both can win, depending on the query.
1. Speed wins when a reporter is on a tight deadline (often "by end of day"). The first three usable answers often fill the slots, and a late masterpiece never gets read.
2. Quality wins when the deadline is days away or the topic is technical. There, a thoughtful, specific answer beats a rushed one.
Think of it like catching a train vs. cooking dinner. For the train, on time beats perfect. For dinner, a few extra minutes makes it better.
The rule of thumb: check the deadline first. Same-day deadline means reply within the hour, even imperfectly. Days out means slow down and sharpen.
Try this today: find the deadline on your next query before you write a single word.
