Myth: Content recommendation widgets send you 'engaged' readers.
No. They send you reflex-clickers conditioned by a curiosity gap. Stress-test the engagement claim:
— Tag inbound widget traffic and watch its pages-per-session vs your organic baseline
— Measure return-visitor rate at 7 days; recommendation traffic almost never comes back
— Check newsletter or signup rate from this source against direct
— Look at the headline that won the click — if it's 'You won't believe', the reader expected a different page
— Compute lifetime value, not first-session revenue
Allegedly these are content consumers. Then why does their LTV crater after one visit? Because the widget sold them a thumbnail, and your real page wasn't it. Engagement you rented evaporates the second you stop paying.
