Starting mid-action vs starting at the beginning
A travel creator told stories in order. The hook was "So my flight to Tokyo got delayed and I had to figure out where to stay." Chronological, logical, and a 40% three-second retention because the interesting part was ninety seconds away.
We re-cut to start mid-crisis. Frame one: "I'm standing in a Tokyo capsule hotel at 3am and the door won't open." Then the story rewound. Retention hit 69%.
The result held across eight story-driven videos — starting at the peak moment and backfilling beat the linear telling every single time, usually by 20-plus points.
Here's what I learned about the tradeoff: in-media-res only works if the rewind is fast. Take too long getting back to the cold-open moment and people feel cheated.
The lesson: open on the most dramatic frame you have, then explain how you got there — but get back fast.
