Great question. Short answer: late on the original is dead, but late with an evolution can win.

Longer answer: trends die in two stages. The straight version saturates first; the meta-version ("everyone's doing X, here's what they're getting wrong") opens a second wave that often outlives the first. The fix: if you missed the front, don't post the plain version, post the commentary, the parody, the "trend autopsy," or the niche-specific failure mode. Being early to the second wave beats being late to the first. Ask: is the original still climbing, or am I now competing on a downslope where only a new angle gets oxygen?
