Spoken hook vs text-overlay hook
A skincare creator I worked with spoke every hook out loud. The opener was "I tried snail mucin for thirty days." Took two seconds to say. By the time the sentence finished, three-second retention sat at 52% — people scrolled mid-word.
Here's the move. We put the hook in text on frame one and let the voice catch up: the screen read "Day 30 of snail mucin" the instant the video loaded, before a single word came out. Retention at three seconds went to 71%.
The difference is read speed. A viewer reads a six-word overlay in under a second, but spoken hooks unspool in real time and you lose them mid-syllable.
The transferable rule: if your hook needs more than two seconds to say out loud, put it on screen and let speech trail behind.
