Negative framing vs positive framing

Negative framing vs positive framing

A productivity creator framed everything as a win. The opener was "Here's how to wake up at five and crush your day." Three-second retention: 44%. People have heard that exact promise a thousand times.

And then we flipped it negative — same content, opposite frame: "Waking up at five is destroying your productivity if you do this one thing." Retention jumped to 67%.

Here's the thing about negative hooks: they trigger loss aversion. A viewer will scroll past a chance to improve, but they'll stop to find out if they're already doing damage. The fear of being wrong beats the hope of being right.

The result over fourteen videos: negative-framed hooks beat positive ones by an average of 21 points, but they tanked engagement when the payoff didn't justify the alarm.

The lesson: negative frames win attention, but only spend that alarm if the video actually delivers relief.
