Points vs roles: two reward systems, two different behaviors

Points and roles are not interchangeable. They drive opposite things.

Points (numeric, accumulating) drive volume. Roles (status, named tiers) drive identity.

Use points when:
☐ You want more of a countable action (replies, referrals, check-ins).
☐ The action is healthy in large quantities.
☐ You can show a leaderboard without it feeling like spam.

Use roles when:
☐ You want members to behave like a 'type' (Mentor, Moderator, Veteran).
☐ Quality matters more than count.
☐ Status is the reward people actually want.

The tradeoff: points gamify quantity and can flood your room with low-value posts chasing the leaderboard. Roles gamify belonging but create a ceiling — once earned, motivation drops.

Best combo: points to climb, a role at the top to keep. Points are the cadence, the role is the retention loop.
