The oldest argument in server management: broadcast to @everyone, or make announcements opt-in via a subscribable role?
What the data shows
Notification fatigue research on messaging platforms consistently finds a dose-response curve — each additional unsolicited ping per week raises mute/leave probability non-linearly. In server panels I've seen, the inflection sits around 3-4 mass pings weekly, after which mute rates climb sharply and, critically, don't recover when frequency drops.
Why it happens
Muting is sticky. Once a member mutes a server to escape pings, the platform stops resurfacing it, so your reach permanently degrades even for content they'd have wanted. You're trading one announcement's reach for all future reach.
The caveat
Mute is invisible in most analytics — you infer it from a quiet drop in announcement open-equivalents, not a clean metric. The 3-4 threshold is a rough central tendency, not a law.
Comparison: opt-in roles cap your audience but the audience that remains is far higher-intent, and they never mute. @everyone maximizes one-shot reach at the cost of long-run reach.
Open question: is there a recoverable mute? Or is every @everyone abuse a permanent subtraction from your addressable base?
