A creator was sure a 100k-view video meant momentum he could ride with a fast follow-up. He posted a sequel immediately. It got 2,000 views.
The mechanism he misread: total views are a lagging count, not a forecast. What predicts continued expansion is velocity — completion rate holding as the test pool widens. His 100k video had already decelerated; retention sagged at the larger cohorts, so the system had quietly stopped expanding it before he even noticed the big number.
The sequel rode nothing because there was no live wave — just a finished one. And the audience that arrived for the first video never carried to the second; reach is per-video, every time.
A high view count is a tombstone, not a tailwind. Watch the retention curve while it's climbing, not the total after it's parked.
