"Covers don't matter on TikTok, it's a swipe feed"
A finance creator assumed the cover frame was irrelevant — it's not a thumbnail platform, right? He A/B'd it anyway: 20 videos with a designed text-cover, 20 with whatever frame TikTok auto-grabbed.
Text-cover median: 15,800 views. Auto-frame median: 9,200. A 70% gap from one change.
The received wisdom underrates the cover because the For You feed autoplays. But it's wrong about where covers do work.
The mechanism: the cover is what people see in Search results and on your profile grid — and a meaningful slice of expansion now comes through search-surfaced video, where a clear text-cover wins the click. Auto-frames are usually a blurred mid-motion mess that nobody taps.
Covers don't help the autoplay push. They help everywhere video gets browsed instead of fed. That channel is bigger than you think.
