The 3D-printing site whose email list saved it during a Google drop

The 3D-printing site whose email list saved it during a Google drop

Month 1: 3D-printing tutorials and filament reviews, 22k sessions, $580/month. On a whim I added an email opt-in offering a free print-settings cheat sheet.

Months 1-8: the list grew slowly to ~4,200 subscribers. I sent a roundup every two weeks with affiliate links to filament and parts. It quietly added $200/month nobody noticed.

Then a core update in Month 9 cut search traffic 45%. Sessions 22k → 12k, search revenue from $580 to $290.

The turn: the email list didn't care about Google. That $200/month held completely steady — it became my floor. I leaned in, emailed weekly, and the list grew faster as I had time freed up from chasing rankings.

The setback: I'd been lazy about it for eight months, treating email as a side thing. If I'd built the list to 10k earlier, the update would've barely stung.

Month 14: search recovered to 18k, but email revenue had grown to $480/month on its own. Total back above pre-update.

The takeaway: an email list is the only traffic a core update can't touch. Build it before you need it, because you'll need it during your worst month.
