The lawn-care site that made 80% of its money in 4 months
Month 1: lawn-care and gardening site, 35k average sessions, $1,100/month average. Looked stable on the annual chart.
The problem revealed itself by Month 6: 'average' was a lie. April-July did $2,400/month; November-February did $250. The site basically went dormant with the grass.
The turn: I needed off-season revenue that the same audience wanted. Added content on snow blowers, indoor seed-starting, houseplants for winter, and Christmas-tree care — adjacent stuff my lawn audience searched in the cold months.
The setback: snow-blower content only works if it actually snows, and my second winter was mild. That vertical underdelivered by half. Seed-starting and houseplants carried it.
Month 14 (second winter): off-season floor rose from $250 to $720/month. Annual revenue $13k → $19k, same core traffic, just spread across the calendar.
The takeaway: a seasonal niche isn't a problem, an empty off-season is. I didn't fight the seasonality, I asked what my existing readers buy in the months they're not mowing.
