The aged-domain bet that almost didn't pay off
Month 1: I spent $680 on an expired domain with a clean backlink profile in the coffee niche, convinced the age and links would let me skip the sandbox.
Months 1-3: nothing. Crickets. I'd published 20 articles and the 'powerful aged domain' ranked for exactly nothing. I was sure I'd lit $680 on fire.
Month 4: it broke loose — but not because of age. A single article on 'why my coffee tastes sour' caught a featured snippet, and the domain's existing links finally passed weight to pages Google trusted enough to test.
The setback: half the old backlinks pointed to pages I couldn't recreate, so most of that 'authority' I paid for was wasted. The wins came from maybe 6 relevant links, not the 200 in the report.
Month 9: 0 → 22k visits, $0 → $610/month. Profitable, but a fresh domain might've gotten me there for $12.
The takeaway: aged domains don't skip the work, they just change which months are slow. I paid a premium for relevance I could've earned, and most of the backlink 'value' was decoration.
