The countdown timer that cut signups 22%

The countdown timer that cut signups 22%
Myth: "Fake scarcity always lifts dating conversions — add a timer, watch numbers climb."

A team running a mainstream match offer believed it so hard they never A/B'd it. When they finally did — 50/50, ~94k visitors over three weeks — the timer arm converted 22% worse, not better.

The killer detail: heatmaps showed the "3 women near you left this hour" widget pulled attention to itself and away from the email field. Mobile users (78% of traffic) saw the timer eat the fold. Bounce on mobile jumped from 51% to 63%.

They'd assumed scarcity = urgency = action. But the offer was free signup. There's no urgency math when the thing costs nothing — a countdown on a free action reads as noise or a scam tell, and a chunk of the audience has seen that exact widget on every shady page they've ever bounced off.

Reality: scarcity only moves people when the offer has a price or a cap — slapping a timer on a free reg just advertises that you're manipulating them.
