Q: Is moving from a network to an in-house program worth the headache?
It was for us, but only because of scale. A program running through a network paid a 30% override on top of partner commissions. At our volume that override hit ~$84k/year.
What the move cost and returned:
— Built in-house tracking on an off-the-shelf platform: ~$9k setup, $400/month
— Migrated 40 of our top 50 partners over six weeks (lost 10 who wanted the network's consolidated payments)
— Saved the full 30% override after the transition
Net result year one: roughly $60k saved after platform and staff costs, plus we finally owned our partner data and could segment payouts.
The caveat: the network handled fraud screening, tax forms, and global payouts. We had to rebuild all of that. Below ~$200k in annual partner revenue, the override is cheaper than doing it yourself. We only crossed that line clearly.
