What the little padlock in the address bar means
Next to your site's address, browsers show a small padlock. New site owners often don't know what it is or whether they need it. You do.
The padlock means your site uses HTTPS, a secure connection that scrambles data traveling between visitors and your site so nobody can snoop on it.
Why it matters:
— Browsers warn "Not Secure" on sites without it, scaring visitors away
— Google gives secure sites a small ranking nudge
— Anyone filling a form or password expects that lock
How to get it: most hosts now include a free certificate (the file that enables HTTPS) called "Let's Encrypt." Look in your hosting dashboard for an "SSL" button, or just ask support to switch it on.
In plain words: the padlock means your site is encrypted and safe; turn on the free SSL certificate from your host.
