The edit that secretly restarts everything
Here's a sneaky one that quietly wastes budget. Editing a live ad group can reset its learning phase.
Learning phase = the early window where TikTok figures out who your buyers are.
Which edits restart it: changing the budget by a lot, the bid, the audience, the optimization event, or swapping creatives. TikTok throws away what it learned and starts guessing again — so costs spike right when you thought you were 'fixing' things.
Safer habits:
— Make changes small (budget moves of around 20% or less are gentler)
— Batch tweaks into one edit, not five throughout the day
— Better yet, duplicate the ad group to test a change, leaving the original untouched
Why it matters: many 'TikTok suddenly got expensive' stories are really 'I edited it three times today.'
Try this: before touching a live ad group, ask 'will this restart learning?' If unsure, duplicate instead. Don't worry — patience here is a real skill, and you're building it.
