The received wisdom: creator replies signal activity and push the video. Repeated because successful creators reply a lot.
Why it's wrong: that's reversed causation — videos that get many comments are already winning, so the creator has more to reply to. Your reply doesn't ping the ranking system meaningfully; it's not an engagement signal from a <i>viewer</i>. What replies actually do is provoke <i>more viewer</i> comments and extend the comment session — that's the real, indirect lever.
What's actually true: a reply that sparks a thread adds genuine engagement; a robotic "thanks!" does nothing. Pin a comment that reframes the video to drive replies.
Replies don't feed the algo directly. They bait the humans who do.
