The received wisdom: short videos win because completion rate is everything. A reasonable idea pushed past its evidence.

Why it's wrong: TikTok optimizes for total <i>watch time</i> and re-watches, not raw completion percentage. A 7-second loop at 95% completion delivers ~6.6s of watch time; a 40-second video at 40% delivers 16s — and the longer one usually wins distribution. Chasing completion rate optimizes the wrong number.

What's actually true: length should match the payload. Make it as long as you can hold attention, not as short as you can hit 100%. TikTok literally pushed long-form because watch-time-minutes is the real currency.

Stop shrinking videos to game a percentage. Maximize minutes, not completion.
