Q: If I archive or modify a badly-named event, does GA4 clean up the old data too?
A: No — this myth leads to ugly surprises in reports. Event edits are forward-only.
— Admin → Events → 'Modify event' or 'Create event' only changes data collected from now on; yesterday's wrongly-named hits stay as they were.
— Archiving a custom dimension stops new collection but doesn't scrub history either.
— To unify old + new in one report, use a 'Modify event' rule plus a regex filter in your Exploration to group both names.
GA4 has no retroactive rename — plan event names before launch.
TL;DR: Event modify/archive is forward-only. Old data keeps its old name; merge with filters, not a rename.
