Q: My Direct traffic spiked — that just means more people typed my URL or used bookmarks, yeah?
A: Tempting myth, usually wrong. In GA4, Direct is mostly a fallback bucket, not real type-ins.
— Sessions land in Direct when GA4 can't read a source: missing UTMs, stripped referrers (app-to-web, https→http), or blocked cookies.
— A Direct spike often signals a tagging regression — someone shipped links without UTMs — not loyalty.
— Cross-reference in Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and look for a paired drop in a known channel.
Treat Direct growth as a debugging cue, not a win.
TL;DR: GA4 Direct = 'source unknown,' not 'loyal fans.' A spike usually means broken tagging.
