MYTH: "One person owning it is efficient."
The correction: a single owner with no backup is a single point of failure wearing a productivity costume. One owner is right; zero documented backups is not.
SOP: Bus-factor check
Run this whenever a critical process has exactly one person who knows it.
Stage 1 — Find
— ☐ List processes only one person can run today. (Owner: team lead)
— ☐ Rank by what breaks if that person is out a week. (Owner: team lead)
Stage 2 — Spread
— ☐ The sole owner writes the SOP, then a backup runs it solo once. (Owner: sole owner)
— ☐ Fix every gap the backup hit while running it. (Owner: sole owner)
Stage 3 — Schedule
— ☐ Backup runs it for real once a quarter to stay current. (Owner: team lead)
Owner: team lead. Trigger: a critical task has bus-factor of one. Done-when: a backup ran it unaided and the SOP holds.
Save this. Run it every time.
