Best of the inbox: escaping the Promotions tab
The tab isn't spam, but it costs you opens. Here's the checklist that nudges mail toward Primary.
🔧 Signals
— Strip the bulk-mail fingerprints — one or zero images, no multi-column template, minimal links. Plain-text-feeling mail reads as personal.
— Kill the giveaway vocabulary — 'free', '% off', 'sale' in subject + heavy CTA buttons are classic Promotions triggers.
📥 Behavior
— Engineer the first-reply — ask new subscribers to reply 'yes'; a reply is the strongest Primary signal Gmail has.
— Send from a real person's name — 'Sarah at X', not 'X Newsletter'. Reply-to a monitored inbox.
🧪 Verify
— Seed-test across Gmail accounts — placement varies per user; test, don't assume.
Why these picks: they target the specific signals Gmail's tabs classifier weighs, not vague 'be relevant' advice.
Saved you ~2 hours of tab-tweaking.
