MYTH: "Track every metric, you'll need it later."
The correction: a dashboard with 40 numbers is a dashboard nobody reads. Track the few that trigger an action; archive the rest.
SOP: Metric pruning
Run this whenever a dashboard scrolls or a report goes unread.
Stage 1 — Test each metric
— ☐ For every number, write the action a bad value triggers. (Owner: dashboard owner)
— ☐ No action? Move it to a cold archive, not the main view. (Owner: dashboard owner)
Stage 2 — Set thresholds
— ☐ Define the value that means "do something now." (Owner: metric owner)
— ☐ Name who acts when it crosses. (Owner: dashboard owner)
Stage 3 — Confirm
— ☐ Top view shows under 7 numbers, each with an owner and a trigger. (Owner: reviewer)
Owner: dashboard owner. Trigger: a dashboard needs scrolling. Done-when: every visible metric maps to an action and an owner.
Save this. Run it every time.
