Myth: pin everything important so people see it

Myth: pin everything important so people see it

The instinct is to pin rules, links, FAQs, events — all of it. Attention research says a crowded pin list is the same as no pins.

What the data shows
Reference-surface studies (pinned messages, sidebars, stickies) find a steep drop in click-through as the number of pinned items grows. Beyond a handful, marginal pins get near-zero engagement, and — worse — they dilute the high-value ones by burying them. The pin tab becomes an archive nobody opens, so the one thing you needed people to read goes unseen alongside twenty they'll never need.

Why it happens
Attention is a fixed budget allocated to a list. Lengthen the list and per-item attention falls; salience is zero-sum.

The caveat
Causation is muddy — disorganized servers both over-pin and underperform for other reasons. But the salience-dilution mechanism is well established outside community contexts too.

The rule: a pin list is a top-three, not an archive. Everything else belongs in a single linked doc.

Open question: do channel-description links (Telegram) outperform pinned messages (Discord) precisely because there's only room for one, forcing prioritization?
