Geo Pulse #44 — Rolling out hreflang across a multi-country site
Theme of the week: hreflang is fiddly, so do it in a fixed sequence.
The sequence that avoids the classic 'no return tag' errors:
→ Decide your model first: language only (es) vs language-region (es-MX, es-AR). Don't mix without reason.
→ Make every cluster bidirectional — page A points to B and B must point back to A, or Google ignores both.
→ Always include a self-referencing tag on each page pointing to itself.
→ Add an x-default for the fallback/selector page.
→ Use full absolute URLs with protocol; relative paths silently fail.
→ Validate the whole set with the Merkle/hreflang.org tag generator, then watch GSC's International Targeting report for errors.
Reference: Google Search Central docs on 'localized versions' plus Aleyda Solís's hreflang generator at hreflang.org. The generator alone catches 90% of mistakes.
