Geo Pulse #58 — Geo-blocking for compliance: how to fence a GEO out, ranked by tightness
Theme of the week: the regulatory map says 'not here', and a soft block won't satisfy a regulator.

— Front-end JS notice ('not available in your country') → the weakest; trivially bypassed, fine only for low-stakes preference, useless for real compliance.
— Server-side GeoIP block (edge or origin) → the practical standard; blocks by IP country before content loads. Pair with an ASN/VPN check or motivated users tunnel right past it.
— GeoIP + VPN/proxy detection → required where the rules have teeth (gambling, finance); blocks the obvious circumvention too.
— Payment-level geo-gating → the tightest: even if they see the page, they can't transact from a restricted GEO. Belt-and-suspenders for regulated verticals.

Lesson: match block strength to consequence. A JS popup is documentation, not enforcement.
