Myth: index your internal search results to capture long-tail

Myth: index your internal search results to capture long-tail

'Q: I heard internal search pages catch tons of long-tail keywords. Should I let Google index /search?q= URLs?'

Short answer: No — this is one of the oldest ways to get hit, and Google explicitly warns against it.

The longer version: search-within-results pages create infinite, low-value, auto-generated URLs — Google's guidelines name them specifically as something to block. Every query a user types spawns a crawlable URL, including spam, gibberish, and competitor names, which bloats your index and dilutes crawl budget. The 2011 Panda era was full of sites tanked by indexed internal search.

If you want to rank for long-tail, build curated landing pages — editorial category or collection pages with a stable URL, real headline, and intro copy. That captures the demand intentionally instead of letting the engine generate junk.

Block /search in robots.txt and keep results pages out of your sitemap.

Rule of thumb: curated landing pages, yes. Raw internal search results, never.
