Thin categories: consolidate them or keep them for long-tail?
'Q: I have categories with only 2-3 products each. Merge them up or keep them for niche keywords?'
Short answer: Merge into the parent when there's no distinct search demand; keep the thin category only if the term has real volume and you'll restock it.
The longer version: A category with 3 products and no searches is just crawl bloat and a thin-content drag — folding it into the parent (with a 301) concentrates relevance and links. But thinness alone isn't the verdict; demand is. If 'left-handed scissors' gets steady searches, a 3-product page that fully satisfies that intent can absolutely rank and convert.
The deciding question: does the keyword have its own demand, and is the page the best answer for it? If yes, keep and enrich it (buying context, FAQ). If it's an inventory accident nobody searches, merge up.
Example: keep /left-handed-scissors (real query, intent-complete); 301 /blue-spiral-notebooks-a6 into /notebooks.
Rule of thumb: Demand keeps a thin page alive; absence of demand merges it away.
