Myth: longer product descriptions rank better
'Q: Should I pad every product page to 1,000 words so it ranks?'
Short answer: No — word count isn't a ranking factor, and padding hurts conversions more than it helps SEO.
The longer version: the "more words = more rankings" idea comes from blog-post SEO and gets misapplied to transactional product pages. Shoppers on a product page have commercial intent — they want price, specs, sizing, shipping, and reviews, fast. A wall of keyword-stuffed prose pushes the add-to-cart button below the fold and tanks your conversion rate. Google rewards intent match, not length. Plenty of pages rank on 150 sharp words plus structured specs and user reviews.
Where extra content earns its place: a short, genuinely useful buying-guide block or a FAQ that answers real pre-purchase questions. That adds long-tail coverage without burying the product.
Rule of thumb: write to answer the buyer's questions, then stop. Length is an output, not a target.
