Myth: a big connection count signals authority
The question: does growing to 10k+ connections build the authority and reach the advice promises, or does it quietly degrade both?
The 'grow your network aggressively' playbook assumes reach scales with connection count. It can do the opposite. LinkedIn's distribution leans on relevance and early engagement from people who actually care; a network padded with low-affinity contacts dilutes the early-engagement pool that determines whether a post takes off.
Three findings:
— Reach is driven by engagement rate within your relevant audience, not headcount; a 3,000-connection niche account often out-distributes a 20,000-connection generic one.
— Indiscriminate accepting trains the algorithm on a muddy audience signal, weakening topical targeting.
— 'Authority' is judged by audience quality and consistency of expertise, not a vanity number readers rarely see.
Caveats: correlational; some large accounts thrive — usually because the network stayed relevant. Directional.
Bottom line: curate, don't accumulate. A tight, on-topic network is a reach asset; a bloated one is dead weight that suppresses your early signal.
