Myth: viral posts drive B2B pipeline
The question: does a high-reach post translate into qualified pipeline, or are we optimizing a vanity metric disconnected from revenue?
The advice equates reach with results. But attribution (connecting a touchpoint to a deal) studies in B2B repeatedly show the path from impression to closed deal is long, multi-touch, and mostly invisible — much of it happens in dark social (private shares, DMs, Slack) that no dashboard captures.
Three findings:
— Broad-reach posts often pull the wrong audience: peers, students, and lurkers from outside your buying committee.
— 'Boring' niche posts read by 800 exact-fit accounts can generate more pipeline than a 100,000-impression hit.
— Buyers frequently cite content they consumed silently for months before a call — invisible to last-touch attribution.
Caveats: attribution itself is unreliable here; self-reported sourcing is biased; small qualitative samples. Strongly directional.
Bottom line: reach and revenue are different objectives. Measure profile visits from target accounts and inbound conversations, not raw impressions — and accept that your best content may never show up in the attribution model.
