The HowTo schema is no longer a reliable route to a special Google result. It can still describe instructional content in Schema.org, but valid markup does not guarantee visibility. Treat it as optional context, not a traffic tactic.
For an existing page:
— Keep the steps visible in the HTML, with clear headings, ordered lists, images, and required materials.
— Remove claims that the markup will produce a rich result.
— Check that structured data matches the page exactly; do not hide steps or add fictional details.
— Keep the markup only if it supports your own data workflow or another consumer.
There is no one-for-one replacement. Use Article when the page is editorial, VideoObject when a useful video is central, and BreadcrumbList for site hierarchy. Use FAQPage only for genuine, visible FAQs and only where the page meets Google’s eligibility rules. Do not add unrelated types just to increase markup volume.
The durable SEO asset is the content itself: a descriptive title, concise steps, answer-first sections, original visuals, and strong internal links. Test the markup for errors, but judge success by indexing and user value—not by the presence of a rich-result preview.
Final rule: keep HowTo markup clean if it serves a purpose, but build the page so it remains useful without any special search feature.
