Breadcrumbs work best when they show the page’s real place in the site hierarchy, not a shortened version of the URL. The visible trail and the structured data should describe the same path, using clear labels such as Home → Categories → Product.
Use a BreadcrumbList with one ListItem per level. Check that every item has a unique position, a readable name, and the correct canonical URL in item. Keep the order sequential: 1, 2, 3.
Common mistakes:
• Marking up breadcrumbs that are not visible on the page
• Using internal labels or keyword stuffing in name
• Pointing an item to a redirect, duplicate, or unrelated URL
• Treating filters, tracking parameters, or pagination as permanent hierarchy levels
Validate the JSON-LD, then compare it with the rendered trail on several templates. Test category pages, product pages, and edge cases rather than checking only the homepage.
A small, consistent breadcrumb trail is better than a detailed markup layer that contradicts the site structure.
