HowTo markup is no longer a reliable path to a special Google search result. It can still describe a page, but it does not replace useful content or guarantee extra visibility. Treat it as optional metadata, not an SEO strategy.
For instructional pages, prioritize:
• A clear task in the title and opening paragraph.
• A visible, ordered sequence of steps.
• Specific actions instead of vague labels like “configure settings.”
• Prerequisites, tools, warnings, and the expected outcome.
• Images or video placed beside the step they explain.
Use structured data only when it genuinely fits:
• VideoObject for an instructional video.
• BreadcrumbList for site hierarchy.
• Article or another applicable type for the page itself.
Do not turn steps into FAQPage markup just to chase a rich result. FAQ markup requires real questions and answers, with limited eligibility.
Test the rendered page, confirm that marked-up information is visible to users, and measure organic clicks rather than schema presence. The durable replacement for HowTo rich results is not another schema type—it is clearer, more usable instructional content.
