Deep dive: an edit pass to lower the reading effort of lander copy

Readability is a measurable property, and easier-to-read copy converts and comprehends better — the practical takeaway from decades of readability research (Flesch-Kincaid and successors) and from plain-language studies showing comprehension and task success rise as reading grade falls. On a lander, where attention is scarce and skimming is the norm, reading effort is friction you can edit away without changing a single claim.

The edit pass:

— Step 1: Measure the baseline grade level. Run the copy through a readability score. Most marketing copy lands far higher than its audience needs; even expert readers prefer lower-effort prose when skimming under time pressure.
— Step 2: Shorten sentences to one idea each. Long sentences force the reader to hold multiple clauses in working memory; splitting them drops the load and speeds the skim.
— Step 3: Cut the throat-clearing openers. "In today's fast-paced world" and "We are pleased to offer" delay the point. Lead with the value; the reader decides in the first clause whether to continue.
— Step 4: Replace abstract nouns with verbs. "The utilization of our solution enables optimization" is fog; "Our tool cuts your costs" is a claim. Nominalizations hide the action and inflate the grade level.
— Step 5: Front-load every paragraph. Skimmers read first lines and skip the rest, so the first sentence must carry the paragraph's payload — the inverted-pyramid habit from journalism applies directly.
— Step 6: Read it on a phone at arm's length. Density that looks fine on a wide monitor becomes a wall of text on mobile, where most of your traffic actually reads.

Mechanism: every unit of reading effort competes with the attention the visitor has budgeted for the decision. Lowering the effort doesn't dumb down the message — it removes the tax between the message and comprehension, so more of the offer actually lands.

The caveat: readability scores measure surface mechanics, not meaning or persuasion. A page can score beautifully and say nothing, or score poorly because of necessary technical terms your expert audience expects. Use the score as a friction gauge, not a target to game — clarity serves the message, it isn't a substitute for having one.

TL;DR
— Measure reading grade; lower effort lifts comprehension even for expert skimmers.
— One idea per sentence, cut throat-clearing, swap abstract nouns for verbs, front-load paragraphs.
— Readability is a friction gauge, not a target — don't game the score at the cost of meaning.
